He Only Asked His Mailman for Junk Mail, but He Received So Much More

For most of us, junk mail is a daily annoyance. But for 12-year-old Mathew Flores, it was one of the few pieces of reading material he could get his hands on. He didn’t have books to read, and he couldn’t get any at the library because he had no car and no money for bus fare.

All of that changed when he met Ron Lynch, his local mailman.

The young Sandy resident was reading junk mail when Lynch stopped by to make his daily delivery. Flores asked if Lynch had any extra junk mail that he could have. As the two started talking, Lynch learned about Flores’ plight. Feeling driven to help the young reader, he took to social media, asking if anyone had a book to give.

He expected 50 to 60 books to flow in. But he didn’t expect the post to go viral.

Thanks to people worldwide, Flores now has 350 books and counting.

He was astonished, yet thrilled.

“They said, ‘These books are for you,'” Mathew told a local news outlet. “I thought they were mistaken, but they were for me.” He plans to read them — all of them — and share them with other children.

What an amazing kid! I hope he enjoys each and every one of his literary gifts.
