4 Important Tips for Lowering Your Risk of Breast Cancer

Although family history has a lot to do with an increased risk of developing breast cancer, there are steps women can take to lower their chance of developing the disease. According to The Wall Street Journal, only 10 percent of breast cancers are caused by an inherited gene such as BRCA1 and 2, and PALB2.

The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted several things that women should do if they want to decrease their chance of developing breast cancer. These include the following:

Maintain a healthy weight
It’s important to maintain a healthy weight for a variety of reasons, and decreasing your risk of breast cancer is one of them. You can stay at a healthy weight by exercising regularly and eating right. Losing even a small amount of weight can help (no need to become a marathon runner). Exercise regularly
It’s ideal to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, regardless of whether you’re trying to lose weight. Aim for three to four hours of exercise a week, although five to seven hours is better if you want to reduce your risk of breast cancer.

Limit alcohol intake
The American Cancer Society encourages you to limit your alcohol consumption if you want to lower your risk of breast cancer. While a glass of wine is a nice way to relax in the evening, you should watch how much you’re drinking. It’s better for your health to have three or fewer drinks a week. One drink might be 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

Quit smoking
Smoking is bad for your health in general, so if you’re doing it, now is as good a time as any to quit. Smoking causes lung cancer as well as a plethora of other health issues, and breast cancer is just one more thing to watch out for if you’ve been exposed to cigarette smoke on a regular basis.

There is no surefire way to prevent cancer from occurring, but with these steps, you’ll be giving yourself the best chance at evading cancer possible.
